COMBUSTION

Summary of basic thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, fluid dynamics and chemical kinetics. Conservation equations for multicomponent reacting systems. Interface boundary conditions. Diffusion flames, droplet and particle combustion. Steady laminar pre-mixed gas flames. Mechanisms of flame propagation. Flammability limits. Flame quenching. Non-steady phenomena in flames. Cellular structure. Steady and non-steady turbulent flames. Spray combustion. Detonative combustion. One-dimensional steady detonation waves. Initiation of detonation. Detonational instability and structure.


COMPUTER-AIDED MECHANICAL DESIGN

This course is an introduction to analytical tool programming techniques, interactive computing, numerical methods, fundamentals of CAD systems, and finite element analysis. Assignments will consist mostly of original programming. There is also "Hands-out" training using a CAD package.


PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

Characteristics of production systems. System boundaries, input-output, feedback time-lag effects, dynamics of production systems. Design for manufacturability. Process planing, process machine tool selection, break-even analysis, CAPP. Production planning, scheduling and control of operations ; software for production management. Performance and economics. Manufacturing strategy ; FMS, CIM, concurrent engineering, agile manufacturing. Hands-on experience with industrial factory simulation software.
